Radioactive iodine therapy (I-131) is the safest and most effective treatment for feline hyperthyroidism. It is also the treatment of choice for hyperthyroidism in people.
We work closely with the specialists at Associated Veterinary Specialists in Bridgeton, Missouri to offer this service to you.
Prior to treatment, all cats are carefully examined for the presence of other diseases and to determine whether they are candidates for I-131 therapy.
I-131 therapy involves a subcutaneous injection of radioactive iodine and hospitalization for 3 days under close, 24 hour-a-day supervision. No anesthesia is required and the treatment is specific for thyroid tissue; it does not harm other tissues or organs.
After 3 days in the hospital, cats are released to their owners with simple, specific guidelines regarding their home care for the next 2 weeks. All cats receive a follow up examination two weeks after therapy and a recheck thyroid test in 4 weeks.
I-131 therapy has a 98% success rate in treating hyperthyroidism. In most cases, the lifelong daily medication for thyroid disease is eliminated.
